Summer is Coming: Keeping Your Pet Safe in the Heat

As temperatures rise in North Carolina, it’s important to remember that our pets feel the heat just as much as we do—sometimes even more! With their thick fur coats and limited ability to cool off, pets are especially vulnerable to heat-related issues. At Eastwaye Veterinary Clinic, we want to make sure your furry family members stay safe, comfortable, and healthy all summer long.

Watch for Signs of Heat Stress

Pets don’t sweat the way humans do. They mainly cool themselves through panting and limited sweating through their paw pads. When it gets too hot, especially during high humidity, they can overheat quickly. Common signs of heat stress or heatstroke in pets include:

Excessive panting or drooling

Lethargy or weakness

Vomiting or diarrhea

Rapid heartbeat

Bright red or pale gums

If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cool area immediately and contact your veterinarian.

Hot Pavement = Hot Paws

Summer sun heats up sidewalks, asphalt, and driveways quickly. If it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Try walking your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when surfaces are cooler. You can also consider protective booties or sticking to grassy areas during walks.

Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car

Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a parked car can climb rapidly to dangerous levels. Cracking the windows is not enough to keep the air cool. Leaving a pet in a hot car—even for a few minutes—can lead to deadly heatstroke. When running errands, it’s safest to leave your pet at home in the air conditioning.

Hydration is Key

Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, clean water—especially when spending time outdoors. You can even add ice cubes to their water bowl or offer pet-safe frozen treats to help them stay cool.

Use Shade and Airflow

If your pet is outside, ensure they have plenty of shade and access to a cool, ventilated area. Fans, shaded porches, or even kiddie pools can help your pet beat the heat. And of course, never chain or confine your pet outside without a way to escape the sun.
