5 Reasons to Microchip Your Pet

A pet microchip is a small radio frequency identification (RFID) device that provides pets with a permanent form of identification that is the most effective way for lost pets to be reunited with their families. If you’re thinking about getting your pets microchipped, we encourage you not to wait any longer and to think about the following great reasons to have your pets microchipped.

1. Microchips Work!
Pet microchips greatly increase the chances of being reunited with a lost pet. According to one study, 21.9% of dogs without microchips were reunited with their owners compared to 52.2% with microchips. Only 1.8% of cats without microchips were reunited with their families compared to 38.5% of cats with microchips.

2. Proof of Ownership
Pet microchips do not only provide permanent identification for pets, but they are also permanent proof that you own your pet. If your pet gets taken out of your yard or “rescued” by a well-meaning individual, you’ll be able to prove that your pet is yours with the information provided by your pet’s microchip registration.

3. Collars and Tags Come Off
We always recommend that cats and dogs have collars and ID tags because they provide a quick way for people to see that your pet has an owner and to contact you if your pet becomes lost. However, collars and/or ID tags often come off when a lost pet is distressed, so there’s no guarantee that your pet will be able to be identified without a microchip.

4. It’s Easy
Microchipping a pet is a quick and easy procedure that doesn’t even require anesthesia. Similar to getting a vaccination, a pet microchip is inserted just beneath a pet’s skin between the shoulder blades using a hollow needle.

5. No One Plans to Lose Their Pet
No one – especially owners of indoor-only pets – plan on their pets getting lost. However, it happens all the time. Pets can break through window screens, run out the door when you’re bringing the groceries, or dig their way out of the backyard.
